Grading your property is one of the most important steps of the landscaping process. Do it right, and water will run the way it should. Do it wrong, and you may be in for larger issues.

A common question we get is, what is grading when landscaping? Grading is one of the foundational tasks when working on any landscaping project. Proper grading sets the flow of water on the property and directs it where you want it to go. Without proper grading, water can pool in unwanted areas, and potentially cause issues with the foundation of the house or with other elements of your landscape. Here we're going to answer some simple questions about grading and landscaping.

           1. What is grading in landscaping

Grading is ensuring that the properties slope is conducive to desired water flow direction. It is figuring out where you want the water to go, where you don't want it to go, and then moving the earth or installing new soil in order to send water in the desired directions. Grading is something that needs to be done at the very beginning of a landscaping project so that the rest of the elements fit properly. It is important to take some time ensuring that the grade is done properly so that everything else works perfectly.

           2. Why do you need to grade your yard

If you grade your yard properly, then water will flow where you want and need it to. Water is one of the more destructive elements for your home and having it pool around the foundation, or in areas where you're planting trees and flowers can cause unwanted and expensive damages. It is absolutely crucial to ensure that water is flowing and not stagnant on the property.

Grading your lawn will provide a number of benefits, including a more level and beautiful looking landscape, water and moisture flowing in a steady fashion that doesn't cause damage, unnoticeable slopes in the property, and ultimately peace of mind. We tend to look at grading as less of a choice and more of a must because we need to leave your property looking better than it did before and ensure that our work stand up to the test of the elements and time.

           5. Cost of grading a lawn

We grade properties as part of our overall hardscaping projects and flower bed installations. The cost of grading a property will vary greatly and it's important to get a few quotes. The cost will differ depending on the size of the property, the materials needed, the time needed, and the difficulty involved in accessing certain areas of the property.

           Final Considerations

Now you know what grading is in landscaping and why it's important. If you're going to try to do it yourself, it is best to hire the proper equipment and machines to help you do the work right. As long as you ensure water flow is headed away from the house and won't pool in any areas, then you're getting the basics down.

If you're looking for a way to make your garden look fantastic while providing protection and healthy nutrients to your plants, then mulch may be exactly what you're looking for. Mulch is an organic or inorganic mixture of wood chips, chopped leaves, grass clippings, straw, compost, and many other potential ingredients. Essentially, it is repurposed natural material that is extremely useful around the garden.

Below are a few ways that mulch is great for your plants

           1. Mulch improves the soil's ability to retain moisture

When you spread a layer of mulch out in your garden, it acts as a bit of a blanket from the sun and from high winds that can sometimes dry out the soil. With an added layer of protection, the soil can retain more of its moisture, allowing for the plants, trees, and shrubs to maintain ideal growing conditions. Mulch also keeps the soil cooler which helps reduce evaporation.

           2. It helps maintain a consistent temperature for your plants

In the same way that mulch keeps the garden soil from becoming too hot, it also helps keep necessary heat in. The protective layer of raw materials acts as a bit of a blanket, and protects against extreme temperature fluctuations, which gives plants a more ideal growing environment.

           3. Mulch can be used as weed control

Weeds thrive on sunlight and warm soil. Since mulch does a great job of maintaining a steady temperature for your garden, it already provides an environment that plants love, but weeds don't. Also, mulch block excess sunlight into the soil that weeds thrive on for growth. A 2-3 inch layer of mulch is best for keeping weeds at bay and having your garden look neat and tidy.

           4. Mulch is aesthetically pleasing and adds to the curb appeal of your property

Mulch isn't just functional and healthy, it also can look really appealing. Many homeowners and

spread mulch as a way of cleaning up the look of a property. You have a lot of choices of colors, and overall look, so you can choose the mulch type that's going to look best in your garden. Improving the look of your garden will increase curb appeal and is an inexpensive way to give your property a little lift.

           5. Mulch is a natural fertilizer

Mulch contains many of the main nutrients that plants need to thrive. As mulch breaks down, the nutrients, including nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus seep into the soil and feed your plants. These are main ingredients that are found in most fertilizers as well. So along with protecting your plants from weather conditions, it also helps to give them the nutrients they crave for a healthy vibrant life.

           Conclusion

Sometimes we're asked how difficult our job is as local landscapers. Well, there is a reason why most people hire a landscaping company to do the dirty work. Below we'll talk about what makes landscaping a physically and mentally demanding profession, and which jobs you should hire a team to help with.

           Is Landscaping Hard Work?

There are different types of landscaping projects. Some are easier than others, and some are very difficult from a physicality and expertise standpoint. Even the jobs than may fall on the easier side of the spectrum can be hard on the back and the knees. Landscaping often involves lots of bending, lifting, churning, planting, hammering, shoveling, and raking.

Some of the easier landscape projects that could be taken on at home are gardening, lawn care, fertilizing, and general clean up. Although don't be surprised if your back hurts after performing any of the above. And by the way, you still need to know what you're doing with all of the above in order for the project to be successful.

Then there are the more technical types of landscaping projects that may require years or experience and some creativity. They include landscape designing, landscape lighting, stone work such as patio and retaining wall building. Knowing what to do is half the battle, and it's a tough one. Once you know what you're doing, you either need the physical capability, or you need to machines and tools to help you finish the job easier.

The toughest jobs involve stone work and landscape element building. Some of these jobs include construction of driveways, patios, retaining walls, sodding, concrete, water features, fire pits, and much more. The reason these jobs are so hard is because generally, the materials needed for these projects are heavy and the construction is a dirty job. It requires a ton of physical stamina and strength to complete these jobs as well as the expertise to understand the best way to carry out the jobs.

Landscaping is generally one of the more difficult jobs to do physically. We have tools and machines to help make the job a little easier, but it still involves a ton of body and brain work to ensure that your landscape project is completed in a sturdy and beautiful way.

How to Landscape Around Window Wells

Window wells are one of the spots of your home that are the most vulnerable. So, you want to make sure they are protected, but you also need them to be accessible, and you may want them to add a bit of curb appeal as well. Below are a few ideas for how to landscape around window wells.

           Plant a Garden

Planting a garden around your window wells is one of the simplest ways to add a bit of beauty to your property. Gardens without retaining walls are fairly easy to install and you get to have your pick of what types of flowers or plants you’d like to use. With a garden, you also have the ability to access the window well in case you need to do some repair on the window.

Make sure if you’re planting a garden around your window well that you have proper drainage as well. Your landscaping professionals should make sure that the water flows away from the house anyway, but this is an important consideration.

           Build a Patio

To cover up the blandness that a window well can bring, installing a patio with a seating and dining area can be a great way to add some functionality to your property. With a patio, you can place potted plants, lighting, tables and chairs, or anything else you want to disguise the look of the window well while also leaving it accessible and protected from the elements.

Patios come in all shapes, sizes, and functions, which is great because it allows you the creativity you want to be able to use your yard the way you want to.

           Build Raised Gardens

Aside from planting a garden at ground height, you can also build a garden that is raised using retaining walls and stone. This is one of the more classy ways you can cover up potentially boring window wells with a bit of style and beauty. Raised stone gardens allow you the same perks of planted wells except they completely hide them. You can build a network of retaining wall gardens and really have a beautiful landscape in the front or the back of your home.

           Use Them as Mini Greenhouses

If you’re an avid gardener, you may be happy to know that you could use your window wells as a little greenhouse for your plants and vegetables. By using a plastic or poly covering, you can create a perfect atmosphere for growing your favorite plants in one of the most unlikely places on the property.

           Use Riverstone

Riverstone is a natural looking rock that you would normally find in a fast flowing creek or river. It looks amazing and is a no maintenance way to add a bit of color and stone to your property. By building a small garden leading up to your window wells, you can allow water to flow nicely while covering up the metal window well, and never have to touch it again.

           Conclusion

With winter fast approaching, even though we hate to say it, it’s important to take care of some things before the winter months come along. Winter brings harsher weather that can cause some of the elements of your home to take on a little more stress than usual. Below are some of the projects you should take on before the colder months come along.

           Clean Your Gutters

You may want to wait until all the leaves have fallen for this one. But clogged up gutters with leaves and debris can cause them to overfill when the rain and snow start falling. Clean gutters that can allow a steady flow of water through will help protect your home from unwanted leaks and potentially damaged gutters.

Fix Any Damage To The Roof

Roof repairs should never wait too long to begin with. But, a well maintained roof is going to be a must have during the winter, especially if you live in a place that gets a good amount of snow. With precipitation comes the need for extra protection. So any damaged shingles or gaps in the roof should be addressed ASAP so you don’t get left out in the cold this winter.

           Aerate Your Lawn

           aerating

can be done before the winter rolls in as well. By aerating the lawn before the weather gets cold, you minimize the effect of soil compression and increase natural fertilization. It goes hand in hand with the next must do fall project.

           Fertilize Your Lawn

The regular maintenance your lawn receives during the summer is going to come to a quick halt once the grass stops growing. By aerating and fertilizing the lawn, you’re allowing it to get the last bit of nutrients it may need to stay healthy during the colder months. Then, when everything starts to warm up again, you’ll already be a step ahead and it won’t take as long for your property to be looking lush all over again.

Anywhere that insulation may need to be replaced in the attic, any gaps in windows and doors, any cracks that need to be sealed around the exterior should be taken care of before it’s too late. By ensuring that everything is properly sealed up, you’ll keep your home safe from unwanted moisture in the winter.

After the leaves have fallen and the dirt of autumn has done its worst. Pressure washing your exterior can help maintain a fresh look going through the winter. It is always recommended to pressure wash in the spring, but we recommend also giving it a good rinse during the fall to ensure that no build up can damage any parts of your home as the materials begin to contract.

When Should You Clean Your Home’s Gutters?

Hint: It’s Not Just Once a Year

Cleaning the gutters is—it should be said—absolutely no one’s idea of fun. But like many mildly unpleasant things in life (flossing?) a little regular maintenance can go a long way to prevent a future disaster. An ounce of prevention is, as they say, worth a pound of cure.

But how often should you be heading up on that latter and getting your hands dirty? The National Center for Healthy Housing recommends that you clean your gutters twice a year: once in the spring and once in the fall. It’s undoubtedly good advice. Clearing out debris that’s collected over the winter in the spring and clearing out leaves in preparation for winter will ensure that your gutters are working like they’re supposed to.

It might well be worth it, however, to add in an extra cleaning or two throughout the year. Depending on where you live, events can conspire to fill your gutters with gunk, clog them up and result in unwanted water pouring down the walls of your home and

           potentially damaging your foundation

          .

If, for example, your home is surrounded by large and beautiful trees. First, that’s excellent news for you: beautiful old shade trees are a spectacular feature of any yard. But they can also do a number of things that are tough on your gutters. Hardwoods like oak and maple can drop acorns or maple keys for weeks, causing matter to build up quickly in your gutters. The sheer number of leaves they might lose in fall might mean you’ll have to do a couple of fall cleanings. As well, a long summer of shade can mean that fungi can bloom and grow, trapping more dirt and leaves and leaving your gutters less than efficient.

After a storm is also an excellent time to check and maybe clean the gutters and downspout. Downed branches can not only catch leaves and cause a clog, they can damage the gutter, causing cracks or worse that will cause your gutters to leak and work improperly.

If you live in a northern part of the country that gets frost, it can be important to check your downspout in early spring right after the first thaw. Heaving ground can unsettle its position or cause damage that means the water won’t be running away from your home. Keeping water away from your foundation is critical.

Now, if all of this checking and cleaning does sound like a lot, there are two bits of good news. First, there are many local services that provide regular

           maintenance of your gutters

so you don’t have to. One of them might provide you with the peace of mind of knowing that everything is working just fine (in addition to saving you the burden of climbing that ladder). Second, if you do take the time to clean your gutters regularly, you’ll be sure to find that doing so is faster than if you’ve let the gunk build up.

So don't just wait for a
